About Brummitt
Welcome to Brummitt Elementary School! Our school is located east of the town of Chesterton and south of the Indiana Dunes State Park. A beautiful wooded area borders our southern and western boundaries. The Little Calumet River winds through the woods making its way in a picturesque setting to Lake Michigan.
Brummitt Elementary school serves students in grades K-4.The instructional program is supported by a number of services including counseling, Title 1 reading, speech/language, leaning disabilities, mildly and moderately handicapped, teachers for art, music and physical education, a media specialist, a technology aide, a nurse and three full time custodians. A staff of 49 certified and non-certified personnel cares for the 364 children.
Brummitt Elementary provides programs that are research based to improve the written language skill for all students, and at all grade and ability levels. Specifically, Brummitt staff and students will be using Write Traits to improve student writing across the curriculum areas. An additional focus of open-ended math response was added as part of Brummitt’s School Improvement plan starting the 2007-2008 school year.
An active Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) provides support services and assistance with school curriculum programs. The PTO hosts a number of social functions, the promoting of positive social interactions, participation, and involvement among the parents, and staff, and helping to solidify the school and home environments into a team unit as both visitors and helpers. They help in the office, classrooms, the media center, at special events such as field days, field trips, and read-a-thons. A daily Parent Volunteer Program has been organized to assist with these projects.
